After some extensive research into what you can get for £50, I can conclude that you can buy:- a flute, a fishboard (not sure what that is), some computer games, a printer, some offcuts of block paving, an old ford fiesta xr2i engine, a bike, a settee, a bed, a television, some boxes of red wine, or…… 10 SQUARE METRES OF LAND IN BULGARIA.
I chose the land.
Although I was happy to receive the £50 in the last trade, I couldn’t help feeling less enthusiastic about having money instead of an object. I had absolutely no idea how to spend the money or what I’d end up with so I asked for some suggestions from a few Project 1p followers. Judging by their advise, it would seem that the vast majority of the Projects’ followers have a gambling problem! I had already considered gambling with the money. I wasn’t ruling it out, but really the project is far to young to take such a risk. I decided to put an advert on Gumtree offering to swap £50 for something else.
Gradually the offers started to trickle into my inbox. I was receiving offers from people who had been following the project and were eager to get involved. Their enthusiasm was restoring my enthusiasm. I was beginning to respond to the offers when I received an email from a Mr Paul Holman.
Hi Luke ,
I like your project,
How about I sell 10 sq mtrs of freehold land in Bulagia near the black sea coast…
Great trade Luke. I’m sure people will be queuing up to take that off your hands.
Have you sold it yet Luke?
Nope, the land is still up for grabs. Are you interested?
Sorry no. I was just interested if anyone else had.
I’d get rid of it even if you lose some money.
best stick to things in this country I reckon?
Well any offers are welcome in project 1p. The land was by far the most interesting offer last time. We’ll see what happens this time!
Brilliant project Luke. Trying to think of swapping options!
I love a bit of bartering….
Actually have a suggestion for you. Why not auction it off for a charity and donate the cash. You may find you can get a high price for your bit of land and it will do some good for a lot of people. Think of the Karma points! Then start again.
Nice idea Simplybeingmum, but it would go against the rules of the project. Its definitely something I will consider at the end of the project though.
MrsP – Glad you like the project, keep thinking of swapping options!
I could have sold you 3 flutes for £50 (Chinese imports, but good quality). Seriously – they are sitting at home gathering dust. Was going to sell them on eBay but never got round to it!
Is that an offer Mr Serafini? If so, I’ll put you in the pile of offers and give it careful consideration!
Hello!
I stumbled upon your blog from a link on The Daily Mail. Such a cool story!
This is kind of related, in that pennies can add up to something … I’ve always found lots of spare change when out and about and this year I decided to keep track of it all. So far I’ve found $3.50! “Making” this money didn’t take any effort at all! I wonder where I will be at the end of 2011 …
Cheers!
Love it Medusa! Where can I follow your progress? I can’t wait to see what we both end up with at the end of the year!
I have the property deeds to a one acre plot on the Moon (sold by Moon Estates). All mineral rights included.
Can I bury dogs on the moon?
Hi Luke,
Read your article in the metro this morn and its a cool project.
I don’t really have anything to offer other than an original piece of artwork I have created… might seem like a crap offer but people seem to like my work so maybe it could raise more money for you?
If you are interested reply here or fire me an email… ill send over links to work you can view or jpgs etc 🙂
If not no worries and good luck.
Hi Robert, thanks for the offer it sounds great! I’d love to see some pics of your work. send me some.
do you have my email?
Hey Luke have you got a google maps link to your plot of land?
I’m interested to what £50 can get you in Bulgaria.
The locale that is.
Hey,
£50 is 115.71 Bulgairan Leva
115.71 lv will get out
38 2l.(1/2 gallon) bottles of beer or
115 loafs of bread or
15.5 kg (34.2 pounds) of beef or
an iPhone replica phone
Cool, thanks for the info Val!
The village is called Mali Izvor. Look on google maps. It’s difficult to work out which field my 10 sq m is in!
Well thats about 1 and 1/2 hours away from the sea and in a village that has 47 people living in it. so probably there won’t be post, shops or anything to be living there. i thing that the investition isn’t the best, any how wish you luck with the project, if you need more info about Bulgaria let me know.
Will see if I can work that out for you Cole… bear with me.
You can see some of my stuff here: http://www.facebook.com/pages/PixelsPencil/186739594686503
Thanks Robert. Nice stuff! I’ll give it some thought…
I have recently posted about bartering on my site – hence I found your project as someone who reads my blog pointed me toward you. Shall I highlight your project and see whether anyone has a swap for you? I get mostly US readers? If so e-mail me and I will do a feature on the project with your consent.
I have put a link to Project 1p on my post today – with some explanation. It makes sense as I posted about bartering on Thursday also.

Hi again Lukelad!
You can follow my progress on my LiveJournal blog here:

I’m very close to $4.00 now! (U.S. currency)
Cheers!
This is a great project, what a way to spend a year.
I work for a charity called Kids Inspire and we are trying to show children and young people that by giving as little as 1p (if we all give that is!) we can make a difference. This is a GREAT way to show how true that is.
Good luck
Roice
